# Apple News for Android: Closest Alternatives (2026)

> There's no Apple News for Android. The closest Apple News alternatives for Android and the web, what they cost, and what to do about News+.

*Disclosure: Hushread is our app. We've tried to be fair, and we say where the others are the better choice.*

There is no Apple News for Android: Apple offers it only on iPhone, iPad and Mac. The closest Android equivalents are Particle, if you want stories picked and summarized for you, and Hushread, if you want to choose your own sources and still see coverage grouped by story. Replacing the paywalled magazines and newspapers in Apple News+ is harder, and we explain the options for that too.

## Is Apple News available on Android?

No. Apple lists Apple News for iPhone, iPad and Mac only ([Apple](https://www.apple.com/apple-news/)). There's no Android app.

That leaves a lot of people stuck: anyone who has moved from an iPhone to an Android phone, households with both, and people who read on a Windows PC at work. If that's you, you need a different app, and the useful question is which parts of Apple News you actually want to keep.

## What you'd be replacing

Apple News does a few distinct things, and the alternatives are good at different ones.

- **Editor-picked Top Stories.** Apple's editors choose the Top Stories, while the Trending section is algorithmic ([Cult of Mac](https://www.cultofmac.com/news/apple-news-app-2)).
- **A catalog of channels.** You follow publications from Apple's catalog. Apple News used to let you add your own RSS feeds; that option was removed, as reported in December 2019 ([Michael Tsai](https://mjtsai.com/blog/2019/12/26/apple-news-no-longer-supports-rss/)).
- **News+.** The paid tier is $12.99 a month after a one-month trial ([Apple](https://www.apple.com/apple-news/)), up from $9.99 before a 2023 price rise ([StreetInsider](https://www.streetinsider.com/Corporate+News/Apple+(AAPL)+raises+price+of+Apple+News++to+$12.99Month+from+$9.99Month/22310524.html)). It's also included in Apple One Premier, at $39.95 a month ([Apple](https://www.apple.com/apple-one/)). News+ is only offered in the US, UK, Canada and Australia ([Apple Support](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102209)).

## The ads problem, even with News+

Leaving Apple News isn't only about Android. Its ads have drawn sharp criticism this year. In February 2026, Kirk McElhearn wrote that "Many if not most of them look like and probably are scams," and noted that News+ subscribers "still get ads" ([Kirkville](https://kirkville.com/i-now-assume-that-all-ads-on-apple-news-are-scams/)). In July 2026, John Gruber said Apple News ads "already look like chumbox Taboola ads" ([Daring Fireball](https://daringfireball.net/2026/07/ads_on_apple_news_suck)).

If the ads are part of why you're looking, that narrows the field. Hushread's reader view has no ads or popups, for example, while Flipboard and SmartNews are ad-supported.

## Apple News alternatives for Android, compared

Here's how the Android options compare with Apple News (as of September 2026).

| App | Runs on | Who picks the stories | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple News | iPhone, iPad, Mac | Editors, plus algorithmic Trending | Free; News+ $12.99/mo |
| Hushread | Android, iOS, web | You; your sources, in order | Free up to 5 sources; Pro $1.25/mo billed yearly |
| Particle | Android, iOS, web | Personalized from people, places and publishers you follow | Particle+ $2.99/mo or $29.99/yr |
| Flipboard | Android, iOS, web | Algorithm plus human editors | Free, ad-supported |
| SmartNews | Android, iOS | Editors plus algorithm | Free with ads |

## Hushread: your own sources on Android, iPhone and the web

Hushread is a news reader where you pick every source, and nothing is ranked or injected into your feed. It runs on Android, iOS and the web at app.hushread.com, synced, which matters if you're moving between platforms or reading on a PC.

It also gives you back something Apple took away: following your own feeds. You can add RSS and Atom feeds, websites without a feed (Hushread learns to read the page), subreddits, YouTube channels, Facebook pages, and topics you name, like "climate" or "chip exports". There are 2,500+ curated sources and one-tap bundles, so you can start with a set of well-known outlets instead of an empty screen.

What you get on top of a plain feed:

- **One story per event.** When several of your sources cover the same event, their articles are grouped into a single story. **See whole story** opens a day-by-day timeline of every outlet's coverage with a summary of how it developed. Our [live stories page](/stories) shows it working.
- **Fewer repeats.** Syndicated copies and rewrites collapse under the freshest version.
- **Trending that counts publishers.** It measures how many different publishers are covering a story, hour by hour, and flags surging stories, with a Local tab for your country.
- **A daily News section.** If you opened Apple News for Top Stories, this is the nearest thing: the day's top global stories with a regional mix, plus a one-minute audio briefing.
- **Listening.** Natural-voice narration reads any article aloud and keeps playing in the background.

The limits: the free plan is 5 sources, and Pro is $1.25 a month billed yearly for unlimited sources. There are no editors choosing stories for you, and no paid magazine or newspaper content. Hushread is also newer and smaller than the big names here, and it's built by one independent developer.

## Particle: the closest feel to Top Stories

If what you liked about Apple News was being handed a well-presented summary of the day, Particle is the nearest Android equivalent. It groups coverage of each story from multiple outlets, writes an AI summary and links out to the publishers ([TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/02/23/particles-ai-news-app-listens-to-podcasts-for-interesting-clips-so-you-you-dont-have-to/)). You follow people, places, journalists and publishers, and it can show opposing sides of a story. On the App Store it's rated 4.8 from 1.2K ratings and carries an Editors' Choice badge ([App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/particle-personalized-news/id6683283775)), and it has had a web version since May 2025 ([TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2025/05/06/particle-brings-its-ai-powered-news-reader-to-the-web)).

Its limits are the same kind as Apple News's: you can't add RSS feeds or your own sources. And one Google Play reviewer in July 2026 complained that "you cannot disable US news!" ([Google Play](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.minalabs.particle)). Our [Particle review](/blog/particle-news-app-alternatives) goes into more detail.

## Flipboard: for magazine-style browsing

Flipboard lets you follow topics, publications and magazines made by other users, with a mix of algorithm and human editors choosing what you see, including its Daily Edition ([PPC Land](https://ppc.land/flipboard-bets-on-indie-journalism-as-washington-post-demolishes-its-newsroom/)). It's free and ad-supported on Android, iOS and the web. If you liked browsing Apple News more than reading it, this is the one to try. More in our [Flipboard alternatives](/blog/flipboard-alternatives) guide.

## SmartNews: free local news with no setup

SmartNews uses a "blend of editor and algorithmic curation" and has a political spectrum slider ([SmartNews](https://www.smartnews.com/en)). Channels come from its catalog only ([App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/smartnews-breaking-news/id579581125)). It's free with ads on Android and iOS, and good for US and local news if you don't want to set anything up.

Google News is the other obvious option on Android; our [Google News alternatives guide](/blog/google-news-alternatives) covers how it compares.

## What about Apple News+ alternatives?

This is where we have to be straight with you. News+ is a bundle of paywalled magazines and newspapers. Hushread doesn't replace that: it includes no paid access to any publication, and we haven't found a free app that does.

What you can do:

- **Subscribe directly** to the one or two publications you read most. If those are the only reason you paid for News+, this may be all you need.
- **Pair that with a free reader** for everything else. In Hushread you can follow the publications you subscribe to alongside free sources, so they arrive in the same feed and get grouped into the same stories.

If you're outside the four News+ countries, the same approach applies. Hushread's Local tab follows your country, and you can add your own national and local outlets as sources.

## When Apple News is the better choice

Stay with Apple News if:

- **You're staying on Apple devices.** If you only use an iPhone, iPad and Mac, the reason for this whole search goes away.
- **You read a lot of News+ titles.** If you regularly read several of its magazines and newspapers, the bundle can be good value, and Hushread has nothing like it.
- **You already pay for Apple One Premier.** News+ is included, so you're paying for it either way.
- **You want editors to choose.** Apple's editors pick Top Stories. If you'd rather not choose sources yourself, that's a real advantage.
- **You want a native Mac app.** Hushread has no Mac or Windows app, though the web app works in any browser.
