Reddit is switching off its RSS feeds on November 13, 2026. That's the Reddit RSS shutdown in one line. The announcement went up in r/modnews on September 30, blamed "large-scale scraping and automated abuse", and told anyone who reads subreddits in a feed reader that "there is no replacement" ([TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/30/reddit-is-killing-rss-feeds-ending-public-api-access-because-of-ai-bots/)). Every subreddit, user and search feed on www.reddit.com goes dark that day, in every reader that fetches those URLs. The public API follows in March 2027. If you've got Reddit feeds in a reader, you have four weeks to do something about them. Here's what Reddit actually said, the dates, who loses what, and what I'd do.

## What Reddit said

The RSS part of the post is two short paragraphs ([r/modnews](https://www.reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/1wubgvt/continuing_our_infrastructure_updates_whats/)). Jeff Johnson, who makes StopTheMadness, quoted them in full the next morning, which saves you logging in to read them ([Lapcat Software](https://lapcatsoftware.com/articles/2026/10/1.html)):

> Because RSS is now a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse, we'll stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13, 2026 while preserving moderation workflows that depend on it through supported alternatives.
>
> For common mod alerts, we recommend Devvit apps like Discord Relay. If your mod team relies on RSS, review your setup and migrate workflows before November 13 to ensure your needs are uninterrupted. If you use RSS for feeds outside of a community you moderate, there is no replacement. RSS has been a beloved part of the open web for a long time, and we're grateful to everyone who used it to stay connected to Reddit.

Read it twice and two things stand out. "Stop supporting" means the feeds go away, not that they get throttled a bit more. And "there is no replacement" is Reddit's own description of what you get if you're not a moderator. Nothing in the post hints at a successor feed, a paid feed, or a logged-in feed.

The same post narrows Old Reddit to moderators and to people who've used it in the last six months. TechCrunch notes that window was 90 days when the post first went up and was widened the same day.

## The full timeline, RSS and API together

The RSS date is one line in a bigger plan. Reddit posted a developer version the same day in r/redditdev, and PPC Land laid out every phase ([PPC Land](https://ppc.land/reddit-to-halt-public-data-api-access-in-march-2027-as-14-000-apps-register/)). The Next Web's report has the same dates ([The Next Web](https://thenextweb.com/news/reddit-rss-feeds-shut-down-old-reddit-ai-scraping)).

| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| September 30, 2026 | Announcement in r/modnews and r/redditdev |
| October 31, 2026 | Reddit stops accepting new requests for public API access |
| November 10, 2026 | Reddit posts a migration progress update |
| **November 13, 2026** | **RSS feeds stop** |
| November 30, 2026 | Registration for the $1,000-per-app migration bounty closes |
| January 12, 2027 | Reddit starts removing API access for unregistered apps and users |
| March 2027 | Public API access closes for everyone left |

Why the API dates matter to someone who only cares about feeds: the only other way to pull subreddit posts is the API, and the door to new API access shuts two weeks before the feeds do. Reddit said more than 14,000 apps and bots had already registered, PPC Land reported on October 4. Those are the ones that get to stay.

## Who loses what on November 13

**Anyone with a Reddit feed in an RSS reader.** Inoreader put it plainly on October 1: existing Reddit feeds keep updating "for as long as Reddit provides them", and after that "we'll no longer be able to retrieve new posts through them" ([Inoreader](https://www.inoreader.com/blog/2026/10/reddit-is-ending-rss-support-what-this-means-for-inoreader.html)). Same for NetNewsWire, FreshRSS, Miniflux, Feeder and anything else that fetches a `reddit.com/r/NAME/.rss` address. Switching readers doesn't help on its own, because the feed is being withdrawn at the source. A few readers never used the feed, and those are the ones that survive. I went through them one by one in [which RSS readers still work with Reddit](/blog/reddit-rss-readers-still-working).

**Websites that import subreddit posts.** WordPress sites using a feed importer stop getting new posts the same day. WP RSS Aggregator's guide has a warning worth reading if that's you: an age-limit setting can also wipe posts that were imported months ago ([WP RSS Aggregator](https://www.wprssaggregator.com/reddit-rss-shutdown/)).

**Scripts and bots.** Anything polling a `.rss` or `search.rss` URL. The logged-out `.json` endpoints started returning 403 earlier this year, so RSS was the last door that didn't need a key.

**Moderators.** The one group Reddit offers something to. Discord Relay is a Devvit app that "allows subreddit moderators to relay items from their subreddit to Discord or Slack channels": new posts and comments, reports, modmail and the mod queue, to up to six webhook destinations ([Reddit for Developers](https://developers.reddit.com/apps/discord-relay)). A moderator installs it from the subreddit's app settings page. It isn't a feed, and it only covers subreddits you moderate.

## Why Reddit says it's doing this, and why people don't buy it

Reddit's reason is scraping. It had already cut feed requests from 100 per 10 minutes to 1 per minute back in June, which Reddit users reported and Jeff Johnson wrote up at the time ([Lapcat Software](https://lapcatsoftware.com/articles/2026/6/3.html)). His October post asks the obvious question: if a limit of 500 or 1,000 requests a day across 50 feeds would cover personal use, and that isn't low enough to stop large-scale scraping, "then I suspect RSS is not actually Reddit's real problem".

Memeburn found a sharper angle. In Reddit's October 2025 lawsuit against Perplexity and three scraping companies, the route Reddit described for large-scale scraping was Google's search results, not its own feeds ([Memeburn](https://memeburn.com/reddit-says-ai-bots-killed-its-rss-feeds/)). And TechCrunch has the money: Reddit licenses its content to AI companies, and its "other revenue" line, which includes those deals, grew 24% year on year to $43 million last quarter.

None of that moves the date. It does tell you this is about who pays for Reddit's data, so waiting for a reversal isn't a plan.

## What to do before November 13

### 1. Find every Reddit feed you follow

Export an OPML file from your reader and search it for `reddit.com` ([how to export OPML](/blog/what-is-opml)). Most readers also show the feed URL in each source's settings. Write the subreddit names down somewhere outside the reader. After the 13th, dead feeds tend to get deleted, and the list goes with them.

### 2. Sort them by what you actually used them for

A subreddit is usually one of three things, and each has a different replacement.

- **A community you read and post in.** Nothing outside Reddit replaces that. Use the site or the app, or try Lemmy, which Jeff Johnson is also considering. Lemmy communities have their own RSS feeds, and the lemmy.world technology community's feed worked fine when I added it ([Lemmy.World technology community](https://lemmy.world/c/technology)).
- **A stream of links on a subject.** For tech, hnrss gives you Hacker News with a points filter, for example `https://hnrss.org/newest?points=100` ([hnrss](https://hnrss.github.io/)). It's an independent project running on Algolia's API, so it could change too. For anything else, a Google News search feed on the subject does the same job ([Google News RSS feed generator](/tools/google-news-rss-feed-generator)).
- **A news source for a topic.** Follow the publishers directly, or follow the topic itself. In Hushread a topic is a word or phrase tracked across the web, so "Steam Deck" or "Raspberry Pi" keeps arriving from every outlet that writes about it, with no subreddit in the middle.

### 3. If you follow subreddits in Hushread, do nothing

Subreddits keep working in Hushread after November 13. You add one the way you do now, by name or by pasting its link, and new posts keep arriving newest first with their text, next to your other sources, with nothing ranked or injected. Hushread doesn't rely on the `.rss` address Reddit is switching off, so the date doesn't apply to it. The free plan holds 5 sources, and Pro removes the cap for $1.25 a month billed yearly ($14.99 a year in the US). If Reddit changes the rules again, I'll update this post.

### 4. Moderators: set up Discord Relay now, keep RSS until it fires

Reddit's own advice is to migrate before the 13th. Install the Relay, point it at a Discord or Slack webhook, and leave your RSS alerts in place until the first relayed post shows up. If your mod tooling is a Python bot on the public API, you've got a separate and bigger job: the Developer Platform runs JavaScript and TypeScript, and the dates in the table above apply to you.

## FAQ

### Is Reddit shutting down RSS feeds?

Yes. Reddit announced on September 30, 2026 that it will stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13, 2026, citing large-scale scraping and automated abuse. Feeds outside a community you moderate get no replacement.

### When does Reddit RSS stop working?

November 13, 2026. Until then `https://www.reddit.com/r/NAME/.rss` still returns a feed. After that date it's expected to stop returning posts.

### Why is my Reddit RSS feed not working already?

Before the shutdown the usual causes are the one-request-per-minute limit for logged-out readers, which shows up as a 429 error, and old.reddit.com feed URLs, which now redirect to a login page. Both are covered in the [subreddit RSS feed guide](/blog/subreddit-rss-feed).

### Is there a replacement for Reddit RSS feeds?

Not from Reddit, unless you're a moderator, in which case you get the Discord Relay app for mod alerts. Readers that never used the feed can carry on: Feedly's Reddit integration runs on Reddit's API, and Hushread keeps following subreddits after the date.

### Does the Reddit API shutdown affect RSS readers too?

Indirectly. Reddit stops taking new public API requests on October 31, 2026 and closes public access in March 2027, so a reader can't just swap the feed for an API call unless it already has registered access.

If Reddit is where your communities live, stay on Reddit and read it there. No feed reader gives you the comments and the posting back. If what you wanted was the stream of posts on a subject, move that stream now, while the feed still works and you can compare the replacement against it. [Hushread](https://hushread.com/#download) keeps the subreddit part going after the 13th.
