There are two kinds of duplicate in an RSS reader: copies of the same article, and different outlets' articles about the same event. Inoreader Pro, Feedly Pro+, FreshRSS, Feeder and Readwise Reader remove copies to different degrees. NewsBlur and Hushread go further and group the same story from multiple sources: NewsBlur does it with full control on its $99/year plan, and Hushread does it on every plan, with a timeline for each story.

## Why you see the same story multiple times in RSS

Follow twenty news sites and a big event arrives twenty times. Some of those items are literal copies: a wire story republished on four sites, or a publisher posting the same article to three of its own feeds. Others are separate articles, each outlet's own reporting on the same event, with different headlines and different text.

A reader that shows all of them is doing its job, but it leaves the sorting to you. One r/rss user put it this way in September 2026: "Half of them are just duplicate news or fluff, and scanning through them feels more like doing homework than actually reading." ([Reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/rss/comments/1wil1cn/))

## Removing duplicates vs grouping similar articles

These are different features, and most readers only do the first.

- **Copy deduplication** hides articles that match one you've already got, by URL, by title, or by how much of the text overlaps. It catches syndicated copies and cross-posts. It doesn't catch a BBC article and a Reuters article about the same court ruling, because they aren't the same article.
- **Story grouping** (NewsBlur calls it clustering) puts different articles about the same event together, so you see one entry per event and can open it to compare coverage.

If your problem is the same wire story on several sites, copy deduplication is enough. If your problem is the same event from ten outlets, you want grouping.

> **What changed in 2026:** NewsBlur launched story clustering on March 18, 2026 ([announcement](https://blog.newsblur.com/2026/03/18/story-clustering/)), so it now belongs on any list of RSS readers that group stories. And since April 2026, Inoreader's duplicate filters share one pool of 50 filters with its content filters, instead of having their own quota ([Inoreader blog](https://www.inoreader.com/blog/2026/04/new-combined-filter-quotas.html)).

### Inoreader: duplicate filters on Pro

Inoreader's [duplicate filters](https://www.inoreader.com/blog/2020/08/win-the-clone-wars-with-duplicate-filters.html) match by URL, by exact title, or by "nearly identical titles" using machine learning, with a precision setting. You choose the scope (one feed, a folder, a monitoring feed, or your whole account) and how far back to compare, from 6 hours to a month, with a default of one week. Matches are removed from view. It is a strong, configurable copy filter, but it's Pro only ([$89.99/year or $9.99/month](https://www.inoreader.com/pricing)), and we found no feature for grouping different outlets' coverage.

### Feedly: Deduplication on Pro+

Feedly's [Deduplication](https://docs.feedly.com/article/218-how-does-deduplication-work) is an AI skill on Pro+. It collapses articles with more than 85% content overlap into one, and marking that one read marks the others. It looks back 31 days, only compares articles from different sources, and doesn't work in third-party apps. Pro+ costs about $8 to $9 a month billed annually in the first year, then about $12 ([Feedly pricing](https://feedly.com/i/pro)). One user wrote in July 2026 that "AI deduping actually works" ([Reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/degoogle/comments/1v9fixv/comment/p0e6m23/)). The 85% threshold means it targets near-copies, not separate reporting.

### NewsBlur: story clustering

[NewsBlur's clustering](https://www.newsblur.com/features/story-clustering) combines exact and fuzzy title matching with semantic similarity, then folds duplicates under the highest-scoring version. On Free and Premium ($36/year) you only see clusters on popular feeds. [Premium Archive](https://www.newsblur.com/pricing) ($99/year, 4,096 sites) gives you full control, including marking clustered stories read automatically, plus Ask AI and a daily briefing. NewsBlur is also open source, self-hostable and on web, iOS and Android. If you want clustering with lots of feeds and fine control, it is a real alternative to Hushread.

### Readwise Reader, FreshRSS and Feeder

[Readwise Reader](https://docs.readwise.io/reader/docs/faqs/parsing) only removes exact URL matches, so the same article with different tracking parameters gets through. FreshRSS, the free self-hosted reader, can automatically mark an article read if its title matches one of the newest articles, and since late 2024 it can do this across a whole category. Feeder, the free Android app, has a "skip duplicates" option you turn on per feed. All three help with copies. None groups coverage.

## How to cut duplicates in the reader you already use

1. **Work out which kind you have.** Same headline on several sites is a copy problem. Different headlines about one event is a grouping problem.
2. **For copies, switch on your reader's filter.** Inoreader Pro's duplicate filters, Feedly Pro+ Deduplication, FreshRSS's identical-title setting or Feeder's per-feed option.
3. **Widen the scope.** In Inoreader, apply the filter to your whole account rather than one feed, since copies often arrive through different feeds.
4. **Trim overlapping feeds.** If a publisher's main feed already includes its section feeds, keep one.
5. **For the same event from many outlets, use a reader that groups stories.** NewsBlur and Hushread are two RSS readers that do this. Particle and Google News Full Coverage group stories too, but you can't bring your own sources.

## The Hushread way: one story per event

Hushread does both jobs, on every plan, including Free. As articles arrive from your sources, it collapses cross-feed duplicates, syndicated copies and rewrites under the freshest version. Separately, it groups articles from different outlets about the same event into one story, so your feed shows one card per event.

1. Add your sources: RSS feeds, websites, subreddits, YouTube channels or Facebook pages, or import an OPML file from your current reader (on Free, the import keeps the first 5 feeds).
2. Read your feed as usual. Related coverage joins the same story as it arrives.
3. Tap **See whole story** to open a timeline of every outlet's coverage, day by day, with a summary of how the story developed. Long stories chain into chapters.

Because articles are grouped, Hushread can also count how many distinct publishers cover a story each hour. That powers Trending, which flags stories that are surging, measured by how many distinct publishers cover them. You can see grouped stories live on our [stories page](/stories).

The honest limits: grouping is automatic and occasionally imperfect, so two pieces of coverage of one event can land in separate stories. The Free plan holds only 5 sources, far fewer than Inoreader Free's 150 feeds or NewsBlur Free's 64 sites; Pro is unlimited for $14.99 a year. If you need rules, monitoring and integrations alongside deduplication, Inoreader is the deeper tool; see [Inoreader alternatives](/blog/inoreader-alternatives) and [Feedly alternatives](/blog/feedly-alternatives) for the wider field, or our [best RSS reader guide](/blog/best-rss-reader).

## FAQ

### Which RSS reader removes duplicate articles?

Inoreader (Pro) filters by URL or title, Feedly (Pro+) collapses articles with over 85% overlap, and Readwise Reader removes exact URL matches. FreshRSS (identical titles) and Feeder (a per-feed skip duplicates option) are free. Hushread collapses copies and rewrites on every plan.

### Is there an RSS reader that groups similar articles?

Yes. NewsBlur groups similar stories with its story clustering, with full control on the $99/year Premium Archive plan. Hushread groups coverage from your own sources into stories with a day-by-day timeline on every plan, including Free.

### Why do I see the same story multiple times in my RSS reader?

Either the same article is published in several feeds (syndication, cross-posting), or several outlets you follow are each reporting on the same event. A duplicate filter fixes the first. Only story grouping fixes the second.

### Does Feedly remove duplicates on the free plan?

No. Deduplication is part of Feedly Pro+. It isn't on Free or Pro.

### Does Inoreader Free remove duplicates?

No. Duplicate filters are a Pro feature. Inoreader Free has no filters or rules.

## The short version

If you see copies, a duplicate filter in Inoreader Pro, Feedly Pro+, FreshRSS or Feeder will clean them up. If you see the same event from many outlets, you need story grouping: NewsBlur on its top plan, or Hushread on any plan. Hushread is free with up to 5 sources on iOS, Android and the web.
