# Rules and filters

> Mute, mark as read or get notified about articles by keyword and by tone, across all sources or just some.

Rules act on articles the moment they arrive. Open the menu (☰) and tap **Rules**, or go to **Settings › Reading › Rules & filters**.

## Create a rule

Under **New rule**:

1. Type a **Keyword or phrase** (2 to 120 characters). It's matched against the article's title and summary.
2. Pick what to do:
   - **Mute:** hide matching articles from your feed.
   - **Mark read:** matching articles arrive already read.
   - **Notify:** get a push alert for every matching article.
3. Optionally pick a tone: **Any**, **Positive**, **Negative** or **Neutral**. Each article's tone is judged by AI.
4. Choose where it **Applies to**: **All sources**, one folder, or one source.
5. Tap **Add rule**.

A rule needs a keyword, a tone, or both.

## Examples

| Goal | Keyword | Action | Tone |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Never see crypto news | crypto | Mute | Any |
| Skim past bad-news pile-ups | (none) | Mark read | Negative |
| Hear about your company | your company's name | Notify | Any |
| Only the upbeat side of a topic | climate | Mute | Negative |

**Notify** rules send alerts even for sources whose own notifications are off.

## Manage rules

Every rule is listed under **Your rules**. Use the switch to pause one, or delete it.
