The Hollywood Reporter ↗How it started
Nicolas Cage's involvement came first. He confirmed he was joining True Detective at New York Comic-Con, ahead of the announcement that Antonio Banderas would join him.
The fifth season continues with Issa López as showrunner. According to The Wrap TV, López took over from Nic Pizzolatto last season.
How it unfolded
On October 16, Deadline Hollywood reported that Banderas had joined the fifth season, following Cage's earlier confirmation. That added a second lead to the next installment of HBO's crime anthology.
The casting was confirmed as a leading partnership, not simply two names joining a wider cast. TVLine Television reported on October 16 that Cage and Banderas would star as the season's central duo.
The same day, Variety Movies reported that production was set to begin in 2027. That gives the season a production timetable, though not a release date.
Where it stands
The fifth season now has its two leads confirmed, with López leading the show and filming scheduled for 2027. The Hollywood Reporter also reported that filming timetable on October 16.
The supplied coverage does not identify Banderas's or Cage's characters, describe the new case or give a setting. It also provides no premiere date.
What to watch
The next scheduled step is the start of production in 2027, according to Variety Movies. A more precise filming date, character details and a release timetable remain open questions in the supplied coverage.
