What the checker looks for
- Broken XML. The most common cause is an unescaped
&in a feed title. Most readers refuse the whole file when that happens. - Outlines with no feed URL. Empty entries some exports leave behind. They import as nothing.
- Duplicate feeds. The same feed in two folders, or once with
http://and once withhttps://. Matched by URL, ignoring the scheme and a trailing slash. - Plain http:// feeds. Not an error, but worth switching to https:// where the site supports it.
Moving readers? Hushread imports OPML too. On the free plan the import keeps your first 5 feeds; Pro keeps them all.
FAQ
What is an OPML file?
OPML is the file format feed readers use to export and import subscriptions. It is a small XML file with one outline element per feed, holding the feed URL (xmlUrl), usually the site URL (htmlUrl) and a title, nested inside folder outlines.
How do I export OPML from Inoreader or Feedly?
Both let you export your subscriptions as an OPML file from their settings, in the import and export section. Open the file here to check it before you import it somewhere else.
Why does my reader reject an OPML file?
Usually because the XML is malformed (an unescaped & in a title is the classic cause), or the outlines are missing xmlUrl. This tool shows the parser error and lists outlines without a feed URL.
Is my OPML file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read by your browser and never leaves your device.
