CD Projekt RED Announces Free Witcher 3 Remaster and New Expansion

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt first launched in 2015 and quickly became a landmark title for both CD Projekt RED and the RPG genre. Over the years, the game received several expansions and a passionate modding community grew around it.

In recent months, rumors circulated about a possible remaster as the original continued to sell and attract new players. Speculation increased when CD Projekt RED began hinting at upcoming Witcher projects and collaborations, especially as the franchise's tenth anniversary approached.

The official announcement for The Witcher 3 Remastered came on August 25, 2026, during Gamescom. Outlets including IGN and Eurogamer reported that the remaster would be a free upgrade for existing owners on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. According to IGN, the remastered edition will be available starting September 29, 2026.

CD Projekt RED revealed that this version is more than a visual update. TechRadar and 3DNews noted up to 40 new enhancements, including revamped gameplay systems and improved combat. A major new expansion, Songs of the Past, was also announced, with a release date set for 2027. Outlets like Eurogamer and Spider's Web highlighted that this expansion will add new story content and at least one new romanceable character for Geralt, developed by the studio Fool's Theory.

Gamasutra and Time.news reported that for the first time, The Witcher 3 Remastered will be available on Blizzard's Battle.net platform, following a partnership between CD Projekt RED and Blizzard. This move is especially notable for Polish players, given the local popularity of both companies.

On August 27, IGN reported that the price of the original Witcher 3 was quietly increased ahead of the remaster's release. However, CD Projekt RED maintains that the remaster will remain free for all current owners.
