Daily Mail ↗How it started
The search for Daniel Craig's successor has produced several reported frontrunners, but no confirmed next James Bond. Craig left the role after 2021's No Time to Die, according to the Daily Mail.
The latest round of speculation initially centred on Callum Turner and Jack Lowden. On November 1, the Daily Mail reported that Turner had quit a film company he founded with wife Dua Lipa, presenting the move as a possible hint that he was about to land Bond. That interpretation was not a casting confirmation.
How it unfolded
On November 2, Lowden addressed the attention without settling anything. "It's all very flattering," he said, adding that he was "not really going to add to the noise," according to the BBC.
On November 3, his Slow Horses co-star Kristin Scott Thomas backed him. "He's got that twinkle, he's cheeky and he's a very, very good actor," Euronews reported. The same day, Variety reported that Josh O'Connor called the speculation an "incredibly bizarre pinch me moment" and said being considered was extraordinary.
Turner also received a prominent endorsement. On November 4, Deadline Hollywood reported that former Bond actor Pierce Brosnan supported him, describing him as "so strong." Separately, the Daily Mail reported that O'Connor said he was "taking some time out" in 2027.
On November 6, the claims about O'Connor became more definite, though not official. The Daily Mail reported that his theatre friends had claimed he had been offered Bond. Adnkronos also carried a report that he had beaten Turner and Lowden, while explicitly stating that there was no official confirmation.
On November 7, the reported field widened again. Consequence of Sound reported that Robert Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult were also in contention and had reportedly screen tested. Screen Rant separately described Pattinson as a new contender.
Where it stands
The coverage does not establish who will play Bond. The November 6 claims pointing to O'Connor sit alongside November 7 reporting that introduces Pattinson and Hoult as candidates. Those accounts do not provide a settled picture of the casting decision.
The evidence also varies in kind. Lowden and O'Connor have commented on speculation, while Scott Thomas and Brosnan have offered endorsements. None of those statements amounts to an announcement. Turner's company departure, as reported by the Daily Mail, likewise does not establish that he has the role.
What to watch
The decisive next development would be an official casting announcement. Until then, the main unresolved questions are whether the reported offer to O'Connor is accurate and how the reported screen tests involving Pattinson and Hoult fit into the search.
