Disclosure: Hushread is our app. We’ve tried to be fair, and we say where the others are the better choice.

Pick Google News if you use Android, a Windows PC or a browser, live outside the US, UK, Canada or Australia, or want to see how many outlets cover the same event. Pick Apple News if you are in one of those four countries, own only Apple devices, and like the idea of editors choosing the top stories, or you want the paid News+ bundle of magazines and newspapers. Both apps are free to read. For a lot of people the decision is made by geography before any feature comes into it.

Everything below was checked against the linked pages, mostly Apple’s and Google’s own, on 7 October 2026.

First check: can you get Apple News at all?

Apple’s feature availability page lists Apple News in four places: Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. News+ and Apple News Audio have the same list, and News+ Puzzles is narrower still, Canada and the United States only (Apple). Apple’s own Mac guide carries the same warning: “Apple News isn’t available in all countries or regions” (Apple support).

It is also tied to Apple hardware. The App Store listing covers iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Apple Vision (App Store), and Apple’s News+ page adds Mac, CarPlay and HomePod (Apple). Neither page mentions Android, Windows or a website for reading. If any of your devices is not made by Apple, see our list of Apple News alternatives for Android.

We found no such list for Google News. It has an Android app with more than a billion downloads (Google Play), an iPhone and iPad app that needs iOS 17 or later and lists 46 languages (App Store), and a website at news.google.com that works without signing in.

Who decides what you see

This is the real difference between the two.

Google News: algorithms throughout

Google says it plainly: “Computer algorithms determine which stories show up on Google News and in what order.” Headlines, Full Coverage and search results are picked based on your language and region, so everyone in the same language and region gets the same subjects. For you, Following and Picks for you are personalized from the interests you set and from your activity on Google services and YouTube (Google support).

You steer it by following topics, sources and locations, by tapping “More stories like this” or “Fewer stories like this”, and by choosing “Hide all stories from” a source (Google support). The personalized parts need a Google Account: signed out, the website shows a “Sign in for personalized stories” box (Google News).

Apple News: editors first, then your device

Apple describes the free app as “Top stories chosen by editors, personalized for you” (Apple). Its Mac guide is more specific: “Top Stories appear the same for everyone”, to the point that a story from a channel you blocked can still show its headline there (Apple support).

Below Top Stories, recommendations come from what you follow and read. Apple says they “are made based on the information stored on your device”, and that your reading activity is tied to an identifier used only by News and Stocks, not to your Apple Account (Apple privacy). That is a different arrangement from Google’s, where activity across Google services and YouTube feeds the picks.

Apple also documents a stricter mode. An option called “Restrict stories in Today” limits the feed to channels you follow, and with it on, “Top Stories and Trending Stories aren’t shown” (Apple support). We found nothing equivalent for the home feed in Google’s help pages.

Full Coverage is Google’s best feature

Full Coverage puts one event’s reporting from many outlets on a single page. Google’s Play listing says it “organizes everything online about a story, surfacing and highlighting coverage from different outlets and mediums”. It is not tailored to you: “Full Coverage has no personalization other than your language, region, and subscriptions” (Google support).

We found no Apple page describing a comparable view where every outlet’s version of one event sits side by side. If comparing coverage is why you read an aggregator, that settles it for Google News.

What each one costs

Both are free to download and both show ads. Google Play labels Google News “Contains ads”. Apple’s privacy page says “Apple News is ad supported”, and that with Personalized Ads on, the topics you read and the publications you follow can be used to choose ads inside News and Stocks (Apple privacy).

Apple News+ is the paid tier: $12.99 a month in the US after a one-month free trial, shareable with up to five other family members, and also included in Apple One Premier at $39.95 a month (Apple). It adds magazines and newspapers, audio stories, daily puzzles and offline reading. Apple’s site promises top stories “from over 500 leading publications”; its App Store listing says News+ gives access to “400+ premium publications” (App Store). We could not tell whether the two figures count the same thing.

Paying may not remove ads. In February 2026 the Kirkville blog, whose author says he does not pay for News+, wrote that with it “you still get ads”, and said of the ads in the app: “Many if not most of them look like and probably are scams” (Kirkville).

We found no Google bundle like News+. You can subscribe to “select newspapers” with Subscribe with Google, and a subscription added to your Google Account can be read anywhere you are signed in (Google support). So expect paywalled links in Google News to stay paywalled unless you subscribe to that publisher.

What neither app does

We found no way to add a source of your own in either app. In Google News you follow the topics, sources and locations it offers, and on the publisher side, since late March 2025 Google News “will no longer use RSS feeds or web locations that were submitted in Publisher Center” (Publisher Center). Apple News lost user-added feeds years ago: a December 2019 post quotes David A. Desrosiers finding that it “no longer supports adding RSS or ATOM feeds from anywhere” (Michael Tsai).

Neither is built as a plain newest-first list of only what you chose, either. If that is what you are after, a reader built on your own sources is a different kind of tool. Hushread is one: you pick the feeds, sites and topics, everything arrives newest first, and coverage of the same event is linked into one story. Its free plan stops at 5 sources, and it does not get around paywalls, so it is no substitute for News+. Our guide to a news app without an algorithm covers the other options, and Google News alternatives compares seven apps.

FAQ

Is Apple News or Google News better on iPhone?

In the US, UK, Canada or Australia, Apple News is the natural choice if you want editor-picked top stories or plan to pay for News+. Google News is better on iPhone if you want Full Coverage, read in another country or language, or also read on a non-Apple device.

Is Apple News free?

Yes. Apple’s plans table marks Apple News “Always free”, with ads. Apple News+ is the paid tier at $12.99 a month in the US after a free trial.

Can I use Apple News on Android or Windows?

Apple lists it for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple Vision, CarPlay and HomePod, and we found no Android app, Windows app or web reader on Apple’s pages. Google News runs on Android, iPhone, iPad and in any browser.

Which is more private, Apple News vs Google News?

Apple says its recommendations use information stored on your device and that reading activity is not associated with your Apple Account. Google says it personalizes with your activity on Google services and YouTube. Both apps show ads, and both App Store privacy labels list third-party advertising as a purpose.

Does Apple News have something like Full Coverage?

Not that we could find. Google’s Full Coverage page gathers many outlets’ reporting on one event, and we found no Apple page describing a matching feature.

If you are in one of Apple’s four countries and live on Apple devices, try Apple News for a week before paying for News+, since the free tier already has the editors. Everyone else should start with Google News, and move to a reader built on your own sources only if the ads or the algorithm get in the way.
